1           Introduction

This document describes i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services Release 4.02 (4.02.055).  This release (or newer) may be included with i.LON SmartServers manufactured after October 2008 and you can apply i.LON SmartServer Service Pack 2A to update Release 4 (4.00.136) and Release 4.01 (4.01.012) SmartServer Enterprise Services installations to Release 4.02 (4.02.055).  See Release Identification to determine what release you have, and Problems Fixed in Release 4.02 for details on what is fixed in this release.

This document contains important information not included in the i.LON Enterprise Services documentation and help files.  Additional information and updates for the i.LON Enterprise Services, including service packs and critical updates, may be available at www.echelon.com/ilon.  The latest service packs and updates may not be included with your SmartServer DVD, and may not be loaded in your SmartServer hardware.  See Echelon’s Knowledge Base at www.echelon.com/support for answers to frequently asked questions.

You can use Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services to access and update an LNS® Server directly with your SmartServer.  With Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services, you can add the data points of external devices to the SmartServer’s embedded applications and to your custom Web pages; keep your local SmartServer synchronized with an LNS database; and use LNS network management services to manage the network attached to your SmartServer.

The Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services include the new LNS Proxy Web service and a Tomcat 5 Application Server that you can install on your LNS Server computer, which must be running LNS Turbo Server Release 3.24 or newer.  Once you install the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services on your LNS Server computer and set up the LNS Proxy Web service on your SmartServer, the SmartServer can directly access any LNS database on the LNS Server.  It does this by sending SOAP/XML requests over an IP network to the Tomcat Application Server on your LNS Server computer.  The Tomcat Application Server then handles the SOAP request and sends it to the LNS Proxy Web service on your LNS Server computer.  Finally, the LNS Proxy Web service communicates with the LNS network database via the LNS Server.  To maintain synchronization with the LNS network database, you can have the SmartServer automatically transmit network configuration changes to the LNS network database, or you can manually send them to the LNS network database.  This means that you can update an LNS database with an LNS client such as the LonMaker tool and the SmartServer will remain synchronized with the LNS database.

To provide full functionality, the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services and the i.LON SmartServer software must be used with the latest Microsoft Internet Explorer, Echelon LNS Server, and LonMaker® service packs and updates.  The latest LNS Server and LonMaker service packs and updates at the time of the SmartServer 4 release are included on the i.LON SmartServer DVD‑ROM, and are also available from www.echelon.com/downloads.  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is included on the i.LON SmartServer DVD-ROM, and it is also available from www.microsoft.com.

4.1      Hardware Requirements

The following are minimum requirements for the LNS computer running the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services:

·        Pentium IV 1.5 GHz or faster

·        1 GB RAM minimum

·        270 MB free hard disk space

·        DVD-ROM drive

·        Super VGA (1024 × 768) or higher-resolution display with 256 colors

·        Mouse or compatible pointing device

The memory required is affected by the number of plug-ins, LNS applications, and other Windows applications that are running simultaneously.  The memory required is also higher if you are running Windows Vista.  More than 1 GB may be required if you are running multiple plug-ins and applications or are using Windows Vista.

4.2      Software Requirements

The following are minimum software requirements for LNS computers running the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services:

·       Microsoft Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows XP.  Install the latest service pack available from Microsoft for your version of Windows.

·       Minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 with large or small fonts; or 800x600 with small fonts only.

·       LNS Turbo Server Release 3.24 or later.  If you install Echelon Enterprise Services SR2A on your computer, you must install LNS Turbo Server SP4A from the i.LON SmartServer DVD; otherwise the LNS Proxy Web service may corrupt the LNS network databases on your computer.

·       Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher.  The SmartServer Web pages support Internet Explorer 6; however, there may be a significant delay when loading the SmartServer Web pages if the navigation pane contains more than 2,000 entries.  You can install Internet Explorer 7 from the i.LON SmartServer DVD to optimize the performance of the SmartServer Web pages.

·       Terminal emulator such as Windows HyperTerminal.  If you are using Windows Vista, you must install a terminal emulation application on your computer since Windows HyperTerminal is not included with Windows Vista.  You can license Windows HyperTerminal from Hilgraeve; install puTTy, which is included on the root directory of the i.LON SmartServer DVD; or download another free terminal emulator to your computer.

5           Installing Release 4.02

You can install i.LON SmartServer Echelon Enterprise Services Service Release 2 or you can upgrade i.LON SmartServer Echelon Enterprise Services Release 4 or Release 4.01 to Release 4.02.  If you are using an LNS Server, you can also upgrade to LNS Service Pack 4A by installing the service pack over any earlier version of the LNS Turbo Server, including an LNS Turbo Server with Service Pack 4 installed.

If you have already installed i.LON SmartServer Service Pack 2 or Service Release 2 (Release 4.02.054), you do not have to reinstall or upgrade the i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services.

5.1      Installing or Upgrading to Release 4.02

You can install i.LON SmartServer Echelon Enterprise Services Service Release 2 or you can upgrade i.LON SmartServer Echelon Enterprise Services Release 4 or Release 4.01 to Release 4.02 by installing i.LON SmartServer Echelon Enterprise Services Service Release 2A or Service Pack 2A.  Service Pack 2A is available as a free download at www.echelon.com/ilon

If Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services Release 2 (4.02.054) is already installed on your computer, you do not need to upgrade it to Service Release 2A (4.02.055).

To upgrade an Echelon Enterprise Services Release 4 or 4.01 installation to Release 4.02, follow these steps:

1.     If you are installing from the Echelon i.LON SmartServer SR2A DVD, insert the DVD into your DVD drive.  If your computer does not have a DVD drive, insert the Echelon i.LON SmartServer SR2A DVD on a network accessible computer that has a DVD drive and copy the files on the DVD to shared network drive.  If the i.LON SmartServer SR2A setup application does not launch immediately, open the setup.exe file on the root directory of the Echelon i.LON SmartServer SR2A DVD. The i.LON SmartServer SR2A setup application main menu appears.

2.     To install i.LON SmartServer Service Pack 2A, download the service pack from www.echelon.com/ilon and store the service pack file in a local folder on your computer.  Open the service pack file and then click the Unzip button in the next dialog.  The i.LON SmartServer SP2A setup application main menu appears.

3.     Click Install Products.  The Install Products dialog appears.

4.     Click Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services SR2A.  The Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services SR2A Software installer appears.

5.     Follow the steps of the installation wizard.  The installation will automatically upgrade the existing Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services Release 4 or Release 4.01 installation on your computer to Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services Service Release 2A (Release 4.02).

6.     After the Echelon Enterprise Services SR2A installation has finished, install LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A from the Echelon i.LON SmartServer SR2A DVD.  LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A is required by Echelon Enterprise Services SR2A and the i.LON SmartServer software for correct interoperation with LNS network databases.  To install LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A, click Echelon LNS Server Service Pack SP2 in the Install Products dialog.  The LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A installer appears.  If you are running the LonMaker tool Release 3.1 on your computer, you can also install LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A by installing LonMaker 3.1 SP3 Update 2 from the i.LON SmartServer DVD

7.     Follow the steps of the installation wizard.

5.2      Upgrading Echelon Enterprise Services from Release 2 to Release 2A

You do not need to install Service Pack 2A or Service Release 2A (Release 4.02.055) if you have previously installed Echelon i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services Service Pack 2 or Service Release 2 (Release 4.02.054).  This is because the Enterprise Services software did not change from Release 4.02.054 to 4.02.055.  If you do upgrade on a computer running Windows XP, you will be prompted to reboot your computer after the installation, and if you do the upgrade on a computer running Windows Vista, you will be prompted to stop the Tomcat 5 Application Server and the Echelon Enterprise Services tray tool after the installation.

5.3      Modifying/Repairing Echelon Enterprise Services Upgraded from Service Release 2 to Service Release 2A

If you do upgrade and then modify or repair the application in the Windows Add or Remove Programs tool, the Service Release 2 (4.02.054) version of the application is restored.  In this case, you can reinstall the Service Release 2A (4.02.55) version to upgrade the application again, if desired.

5.4      Upgrading LNS Turbo Server Release 3.24

You can upgrade i.LON SmartServer Release 4.02.054 (from SmartServer Service Pack 2 or Service Release 2) to Release 4.02 by following the procedure in Upgrading to Release 4.02, including the step to install LNS Server/Turbo Edition SP4A.  If you upgrade LNS Turbo Server Release 3.24 from Service Release 2 (4.02.054) to Service Release 2A (4.02.55), both versions are listed in the Add or Remove Programs tool.  In this case, you can delete the Service Release 2 (4.02.054) version.

6           Setting up the LNS Proxy Web Service

After you install the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services on your LNS Server computer, you can set up the LNS Proxy Web service on your SmartServer.  To do this, connect an LNS Server to your local SmartServer through the SmartServer’s Ethernet connection, or though a dial-up connection that you have added to the SmartServer’s built-in analog modem (applicable models), or an external GSM modem connected to the SmartServer’s RS-232 serial port.  To connect and LNS Server to your local SmartServer, follow these steps:

1.     Right-click the LAN entry in the SmartServer navigation pane if you are connecting the LNS Server to your local SmartServer via Ethernet or right‑click a dial-out connection icon in the navigation pane (under the local SmartServer entry) if you are connecting it via modem, point to Add Host, and then click Server (LNS, E-mail, Time, IP 852 Config, WebTarget) on the shortcut menu.  If are you adding the LNS Server to an existing server on the LAN, skip to step 4.

2.     The Setup – Host Web page opens and a server entry is added one level below the LAN entry at the bottom of the navigation pane or one level below the dial-out connection entry.

3.     Click LNS Proxy to open the Setup – LNS Server Web page, and then enter the IP address or hostname of the LNS Server.  The server entry in the navigation pane becomes an LNS Server entry.

4.     Optionally, you can configure the SOAP Path, HTTP port, Retry Time, and SOAP User Name and SOAP Password properties.

5.     Click Submit to save the changes.

6.     Enable your Web browser to access the LNS Proxy Web service on the LNS Server computer.  To do this, follow these steps:

a.      Add the locations of your local SmartServer and the LNS Server on which the LNS Proxy Web service is installed as trusted sites.  To do this with Internet Explorer 7, click Tools, click Internet Options, click the Security tab, click Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.  Clear the Require Service Verification check box.

By default, the IP address of your local SmartServer appears in the Add this     Website to the Zone box.  Click Add to add the IP address of your local SmartServer.  Enter the IP address of the LNS Proxy Web service in the Add this Website to the Zone box, click Add, click Close, and then click OK.

b.     Enable your Web browser to access sites over other domains.  To do this with Internet Explorer 7, click Tools, click Internet Options, click the Security tab, and then click Custom.  Under the Miscellaneous category, select Enable or Prompt for the Access Data Sources Across Domains property.

Note: If you do not complete step 6, the Cannot Access Remote Host dialog appears when you try to expand the LNS server icon or synchronize the SmartServer to an LNS network database.

7.     Expand the LNS Server entry to show the networks, channels, devices, functional blocks, and data points on your LNS server.  It may take a minute to show the networks on an LNS server after you initially expand the LNS Server entry.  For more information on using the SmartServer to manage the objects in your LNS Server, see Chapters 4 and 5 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

8.     You can operate the SmartServer in LNS mode (LNS Auto or LNS Manual) and synchronize the network attached to the local SmartServer to an LNS network database on an LNS Server.  To do this, follow these steps:

a.      Install the SmartServer with the LonMaker tool, LNS tree, or another LNS application.  For more information on installing the SmartServer, see Chapter 13 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

b.     Click Driver at the top of the navigation pane on the left side of the SmartServer Web interface, and then click the Net network near the top of the SmartServer tree.  The Setup - LON Network Driver Web page opens.

c.      In the Network Management Service property, accept the default LNS Auto option.  In this mode, the SmartServer independently initiates communication with the LNS Proxy Web service, and automatically sends network configuration changes made in the SmartServer tree to the LNS network database.

d.     You should select this mode as long as a firewall is not blocking the SmartServer’s access to the port on the LNS Server computer selected for the LNS Proxy Web service (port 80 by default).  If a firewall is blocking access to the LNS Proxy Web service, select the LNS Manual option.

e.      In the LNS Server property, select the LNS Server containing the LNS network database in which the SmartServer was installed in step a.

f.      A dialog for logging in to the LNS Proxy Web service opens. Enter the User Name and Password used by the SmartServer for logging in to the LNS Proxy Web service.  You initially specified the user name and password in the Echelon Enterprise Services installer.  If you forgot the user name and password, you can right-click the Echelon Enterprise Services tray icon in the Notification Area of your computer, and then click Options on the shortcut menu.

g.     The LNS Network dialog opens.  In the LNS Network dialog, select the LNS network database in which the SmartServer was installed in step a, and then click Finish.

h.     The Use LNS Network Interface property check box is selected and the network interface used for communication between the LNS Server and the network is listed automatically.  Accept these defaults if the LNS Server is attached to the physical network and you want the SmartServer to communicate with the devices on the network through the selected network interface.

i.       If the Use LNS Network Interface property check box is selected, the Network Management Mode property is set to OnNet automatically.  This means that network changes are propagated to the network immediately.  Click OffNet to store network changes in the selected LNS network database and propagate them to the network when you place the SmartServer OnNet.

j.       Click Submit

k.     If you selected LNS Auto in the Network Management Service property, the name of the network changes to the name of the LNS network database specified in step f, the network icon changes to an LNS server icon, and the synchronization automatically begins.  During the synchronization process, items in the SmartServer tree that are out of sync with the LNS network database are highlighted yellow.  When all the items in the SmartServer tree are synchronized (not highlighted yellow), the synchronization is complete.  You can continue to use the SmartServer Web interface during the synchronization.

l.       If you selected LNS Manual in the Network Management Service property, all the items in the SmartServer tree are highlighted yellow meaning that they are out of sync with the LNS network database.  Manually synchronize the SmartServer to the LNS network database following these steps:

                      i.     Click Synchronize in the LNS Network property.  The SmartServer Resync dialog opens. The Items to be Synced property lists the number of objects in the SmartServer tree that need to be synchronized with the LNS network database.

ii.     In the SmartServer Resync dialog, click Start. The Items to be Synced counts down as the synchronization operation progresses.  When the synchronization operation has been completed, this number should be 0, and you can then click Close to return to the SmartServer Web interface (if the number is greater than 0 but has stopped decreasing, you can click Close).  During the synchronization, this dialog displays any errors that occur.

You can shrink and move the SmartServer Resync dialog so that you can continue to use the SmartServer Web interface during the synchronization.  You can cancel the synchronization operation anytime by clicking Close and the clicking Yes in the confirmation dialog.

Note:  You can view a log of the current synchronization in the SmartServer’s console application.  To view the sync log, enter the trace 2 command.  For more information on the SmartServer console application, see Appendix B of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

m.   After the synchronization, observe the following changes to the SmartServer’s App device in the SmartServer tree:  the SmartServer’s App device is moved to the channel to which it was added in the LonMaker drawing, LNS tree, or other LNS application, (e.g., Channel 1); the name of the SmartServer’s App device changes to the name of the SmartServer shape in your LonMaker drawing, LNS tree, or other LNS application (e.g., iLON SmartServer- 1); and the icon used for the SmartServer’s App device in the SmartServer tree changes to a generic device icon.

7           Using the Echelon Enterprises Tray Tool

When you install the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services on your LNS Server computer, an Echelon Enterprise Services tray tool is installed on the computer, and an icon representing this tool is added to the Notification area of the desktop.  The icon is red if the Tomcat Application Server is running, and it is grey if the Tomcat Application Server is stopped.  You can right-click the tray icon to open a shortcut menu that includes commands that you can use to start, stop, and re-start the Tomcat Application Server, and commands for viewing and closing open LNS databases.  For more information on using the Echelon Enterprise Services tray tool, read Chapter 3 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

8           Troubleshooting the LNS Proxy Web Service

If you cannot access the networks in the LNS Server, the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services may not have been installed or configured correctly, or a firewall may be blocking access.  Follow these steps to correct the problem:

1.     Verify that the port entered in the HTTP Port (Web Server/SOAP) property in the Setup – LNS Server Web page is the same as the one selected during the Echelon Enterprise Services installation.  To access the Setup – LNS Server Web page, click the LNS Server entry in the navigation pane on the left side of the SmartServer Web interface.

2.     Verify that the Echelon Enterprise Services tray icon is red, meaning that the Tomcat Application Server has started.  If the icon is gray and the ToolTip states “i.LON SmartServer Enterprise Services OFF”, the Tomcat Application Server service has not started.  To start the Tomcat Application Server, right-click the Echelon Enterprise Services tray icon and click Start Service on the shortcut menu.

3.     Telnet to the HTTP port you entered for the LNS Proxy Web Services.  To do this, follow these steps:

a.      Run Telnet from the command line prompt.  To open a command line, click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.  If you are using Windows Vista, click the Start button, type cmd in the Search box and then press ENTER.

b.     Enter the following command:

            telnet <LNS server> <port number>

For example, if the IP address of your LNS server is 10.2.100.30 and the HTTP port is 80, enter telnet 10.2.100.30 80.

c.      Press ENTER.

d.     If a connection cannot be made to the HTTP port, a firewall is blocking access to the LNS Proxy Web Services.  Continue to step 4 to enable access.  If a connection is made, skip to step 5.

4.     If you selected the LNS Auto network management service in the Setup – LON Network Driver Web page and a firewall is blocking access to the LNS Proxy Web Service, do the following on both your LNS Server computer and your remote LNS client (if being used):

a.      Open the HTTP port to be used for the LNS Proxy Web Services.  To do this, open the Control Panel, click Security Center, click Services, click Windows Firewall, click the Exceptions tab, and then click Add Port.  Enter LNS Proxy (or some other meaningful name) in the Name box, enter the selected HTTP port in the Port box, and then click OK.

b.     Return to step 3 and try to telnet to the HTTP port.  If a connection is made, try to expand the LNS server.  If you cannot expand the LNS server, proceed to step 5.

5.     Browse to the .wsdl file on the LNS server to verify whether the .wsdl file is accessible.  To do this, browse to the following:

http://<LNS server>:<port number>/LnsProxy/LNSProxyService?wsdl

For example, if the IP address of your LNS server is 10.2.100.30 and the HTTP port is 80, enter http://10.2.100.30:80/LnsProxy/LnsProxyService?wsdl.

·       If the .wsdl file appears in the browser, the SmartServer should be able to communicate with the LNS Proxy Web Services.  Verify that the version of SmartServer firmware matches that of the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services.

·       If the .wsdl file does not appear in the browser, browse to the HTTP port.  For example, if the IP address of your LNS server is 10.2.100.30 and the HTTP port is 80, enter http://10.2.100.30:80.  If the .wsdl file still does not appear, un-install and then re-install the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services.  In addition, verify that there are no port conflicts with any other applications.

9           Using the LNS Proxy Web Service

After you set up the LNS Proxy Web service on your SmartServer, you can use the SmartServer Web pages to perform the following tasks:

·       Copy data points from external devices managed with the LonMaker tool or other LNS application to the SmartServer embedded applications.  For more information on using the SmartServer Web pages to copy data points from an external device to the SmartServer, see Chapter 4 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

·       Copy an external device in the LNS tree and then use a device template to paste specific data points to the SmartServer tree.  You can use this feature to automatically create a large number of external data points on the SmartServer.  This feature provides the functionality of the i.LON 100 PointFactory Plug-in, which is compatible with the e2 and e3 releases of the i.LON 100 software.  For more information on using the SmartServer Web pages to copy external data points to the SmartServer using a device template, see Chapter 4 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

·       Create and design new LonWorks networks.  This is useful if you are not integrating the SmartServer with another LNS tool such as the LonMaker tool.  For more information on creating and designing LonWorks networks with the SmartServer Web pages, read Chapter 5 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

·       Manage existing LonWorks networks.  You can create, configure, and delete channels, devices, functional blocks, and data points (network variables and configuration properties).  For more information on managing LonWorks networks with the SmartServer Web pages, read Chapter 5 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

·       Synchronize the SmartServer to an LNS network database.  For more information on synchronizing the SmartServer to an LNS network database, read Chapter 5 of the i.LON SmartServer User’s Guide.

10      Problems Fixed in Release 4.02

The following table summarizes problems fixed in i.LON Enterprise Services Release 4.02.  The EPR column lists Echelon internal problem tracking numbers.

EPR

Description

48602

Devices containing invalid characters in an LNS database (semi‑colon, colon, backslash, and forward slash) are automatically deleted when the SmartServer is synchronized to an LNS network database.

49115

You cannot view or change the port number used by the LNS Proxy Web service to transmit and receive SOAP/HTTP requests.  You cannot view or change the user name and password for accessing the LNS Proxy Web service.

49482

Manual synchronization fails to add dynamic network variables created with the LonMaker tool to the SmartServer tree.

49521

The SmartServer’s internal App device displays Node Object, Digital Input, Digital Output, and Real-Time Clock functional blocks that should be hidden in the SmartServer tree by default.  Because these functional blocks are displayed, they are automatically added to a LonMaker drawing after synchronizing the SmartServer to an LNS network database.

49593

No error messages are displayed when commissioning or replacing an uncommissioned device that has been added to an LNS network database by the LonMaker tool through the device discovery method.

49932

Synchronization is not maintained for LonWorks connections created in the LNS tree.

50117

Manual synchronization fails to add the static network variables in a SmartServer App device functional block to the SmartServer tree.

50310

Synchronization of an internal device created from a template fails.

50358

Synchronizing an object causes synchronization to run in an endless loop.

50378

Copying external devices with child functional blocks and data points fails because the LNS Proxy Web service returns an invalid SOAP message.

50405

FPM functional blocks and their child data points are deleted from the SmartServer’s internal database after the SmartServer is synchronized to a new LNS network database.

50484

If you replace the SmartServer in an existing LNS network database but do not replace the SmartServer’s IP-852 router, synchronization may cause the SmartServer to fail.

50505

You cannot switch the network interface from a local USB network interface to the SmartServer’s remote network interface (RNI).

50535

Manually synchronizing devices that are decommissioned in an LNS network database may cause synchronization to run in an endless loop.

11      Limitations and Known Problems

This section describes known limitations and problems for the Echelon i.LON Enterprise Services Release 4.02.

11.1 LNS Database Corruption

If you add dynamic functional blocks in the SmartServer tree and then synchronize the SmartServer to an LNS network database, the synchronization may corrupt your LNS network database.  Workaround:  If you are running the SmartServer in LNS mode, install LNS Turbo Service Pack 4, use static external device interfaces (XIFs), or run the SmartServer in Standalone mode. (50016)

Adding and removing dynamic network variables with the LonMaker tool may corrupt an LNS network database.  Workaround:  Install LNS Turbo Service Pack 4. (45424)

11.2 Deleted LonWorks Connections

If you delete a LonWorks connection in the LNS tree in which the source network variable is a member of other LonWorks connections, and then resynchronize a LonMaker drawing to the LNS database, the LonMaker drawing does not get updated.  Workaround: Install LonMaker Turbo Service Pack 2A, which is available at www.echelon.com/downloads or use the LonMaker tool to delete LonWorks connections. (46790)

11.3 LNS Installer Problem

The LNS Proxy Web service reports an "ERROR: LNS Turbo Edition is not installed on PC" error even though the computer has LNS Turbo Server Release 3.23 installed on it.  Workaround: From a Windows Command prompt type the following (change the directory in the first command to your LonWorks bin directory). (49417):
