1         Overview

The LNS Licensing Update 2006 updates the licensing software component within all Echelon and third-party products that include Echelon licensing software.  The licensing component manages the activation state of Echelon software, as well as LNS Device Credits (for LNS applications) and LonMaker® Credits (for the LonMaker Integration Tool).  This update improves the reliability of the Echelon licensing software, and is necessary due to security and self-protection changes made by Microsoft in its more recent Windows operating systems and service packs.

If the Echelon software license(s) becomes damaged before this update is applied, applying this update will not solve the license problem—assistance from Echelon to repair the damaged license will be required.  Damage to the software license due to the new  security and self-protection features of Windows will cause the LNS based application to be inoperative until the license is repaired.  Therefore, it is important that this update be applied to all applicable products as soon as possible so as to prevent licensing problems from occurring in the first place.

Software products that this update applies to include:

Echelon highly recommends that this update be installed to all applicable products as soon as possible.

4         Installation Instructions

  1. If you don’t already have the LNS Licensing Update 2006 software (LnsLicensingUpdate2006.exe), download it from www.echelon.com/downloads.
  2. Shut down all LNS applications, including LNS enabled Windows services.  LNS enabled Windows services are LNS applications that are being run under the Windows Service Manager as background processes.  Examples from Echelon include the LNS Server application and the LNS DDE Server.  Third party examples are typically HMI drivers for HMI workstation software products.
  3. Log on with Administrator privilege.
  4. For version 3 LNS Server installations that are not already at LNS version 3.08 or higher, LNS 3 Service Pack 8 or higher must be installed before applying this update.  Service packs are available from www.echelon.com/downloads.
  5. Run LnsLicensingUpdate2006.exe.
  6. Reboot if requested by the installer.

Note that this update only updates the licensing software component of the LNS Server distribution—it does not modify the major portion of the LNS Server software that LNS applications depend upon.  For example, if you have LNS 3.08 installed, the LNS Server software will still be version 3.08.  The same is true for LNS Turbo Edition.

Note that un-installation of the LNS Licensing Update 2006 will only remove its “Add/Remove Programs” item from the Windows control panel.  It will not reverse the licensing component updates that are applied by the installation.

5         Installation Details

The LNS Licensing update may be run silently, as an installation embedded within another product installation, via the following command line:

LnsLicensingUpdate2006.exe /s /v” /qn”

Note the spaces before “/s”, “/v” and “/qn”, as they are significant.

The LNS Licensing update was created with InstallShield DevStudio 9 as a single-file, Basic MSI installer.  If you will embed this update installation inside of another product installation using InstallShield, you may find information about its return codes under the InstallShield help topic “Troubleshooting Setup.exe Run-Time Errors”.  A simpler way to determine success or failure of the LNS Licensing Update installation is to examine the file version of “crypserv.exe”, found in the <Windows>\System32 directory.  Before this update is applied to the relevant products, the version is likely to be “5.4.0.0”.  After a successful installation, the version will be “6.0.0.0” or greater.
